| I
waited ages for this to come out in paperback! I was delighted when it did and after
reading it - it was worth the wait! This volume is about a badger called Lord Russano who has written a story telling of Lord Brocktree's conquest of the great volcano fortress known as Salamandastron. It is a kind of history book for the inhabitants of the world of Redwall Abbey. It is full of the usual adventure and battle mixed with lots of feasts that generally make up "Redwall" books. Although there is a sameness about many of the books and character types in this series, each book still manages to hold my attention and interest. The similarities are often used to show distinctions between different species. I liked this book very much. The atmosphere was exciting and enthralling. Jacques still manages to include some surprises and there is always the worry that this time, good will NOT triumph. You begin to care about the characters he creates and their fate becomes all-important. Southpaw and Bobweave, two comical, mischievous hares, were my favourite characters. They made me laugh and I liked their attitudes. I was also very fond of Lord Brocktree himself who seemed a mighty yet caring creature who uses his strength for the good of his people. Come on Brian Jacques and write some more quickly - I do not think I will ever tire of them! October 2001 |
