| I Liked this book a lot but it was not what I expected. It is written
by someone in Denmark and it is a million copy, best seller, first written in 1963. David is an escaped prison camp boy who is in constant fear that 'they' will get him. He travels across Europe from Greece to Denmark encountering various problems on the way. David must learn to survive and be on guard at all times, travelling down Greece by car and foot, eating, sleeping and drinking as much as he can without destroying his supplies. He must learn to overcome his former instincts and learn to look out for himself more than other people in this new world of danger and harshness. Pushing on to Italy as a stowaway on a ship, he learns to ignore all feelings of hunger, sleep and thirst and manages to sneak off the ship and onto dry land once more. Moving across Italy to Switzerland, he finds out that not all people are as bad as he once thought. Crossing the border into Switzerland, he now has to put up with the harsh, cruel weather that buffets him about on the Alps. He makes it over but will 'they' catch up with him, will he starve or will he never make it? This book is written in 3rd person and has a lot of personality. Anne Holm is very good at creating different atmospheres at different points in the book. You begin to really care about David and his welfare. He is a good character that is described very well and I think that anyone from 7 to pensioner would thoroughly enjoy this book. Iestyn Evans - September 2000 |
