| Stella's
mum is getting married again to 'Uncle Bill'. Uncle Bill is not her favourite person.
While her mum goes on her honeymoon, Stella has to stay in Evergreen Summer Camp.
She does not want to go and she is determined to hate it before she even sees it. I think
she is a bit jealous and feels left out of things. She is to be a bridesmaid at the wedding and when she is getting her hair cut, there is a misunderstanding and the hairdresser ends up shaving it all off! She goes to Evergreen looking like a skin-head boy and feeling in a very bad mood and to top it all they have swimming lessons there and Stella is scared of pools - very scared! Stella is put into Emerald Team and at first she finds it hard to make friends, probably because of her attitude of hating everything there. As the time goes on, she makes friends and begins to enjoy things a little more. I think it sounds like an ok sort of place but I would prefer to go on holiday with my family and I would feel sad if they wanted to go off without me. The camp was a bit old fashioned too with not many good facilities. It is a good book. It has funny parts and parts which tell you how Stella feels. I think that it is very realistic and the children say things that I can imagine my friends saying not like in some books where the children say daft things or where the language is very formal and old fashioned. Stella has a sarcastic sense of humour which is funny too. Sometimes the girls in Jacqueline Wilson's different books seem very similar and I wish she would write more stories with boys as main characters too. Iestyn Evans 1st July 2000 |
