| I think
that Vinegar Street is a very good, thrilling and well-written book. It is written in 1st
person (that is Poppy) and it seems as though you are in Poppy's mind. Vinegar Street is a run-down street with weeds, cracked bricks and dustbin lids almost everywhere. Poppy and her friends make up the small gang of 4 people that live there. Life is going well there until the new person comes. The new person is nasty and horrible. Poppy must make her go or Vinegar Street will never be the same again! The style of writing in this book is very poetical. The end part of the book is even written as a song. The style of text also brings out the character of Poppy by showing us what her reactions to different situations would be. Poppy seems like a person who is imaginative and clever. She seems to be helpful and kind but also a person who can get her own way a lot. The other people that are in Vinegar Street seem to look up to her (apart from the new person). She is very adventurous and she seems to like making things. She also sounds as if she cares about other peoples' welfare a lot. Poppy sounds ordinary at first but she is not. She possesses quite a few rare abilities e.g. she has something like a sixth sense that she calls "tingle voice". It tells her when something weird is happening! She does not have many belongings to build with but she uses the litter that is strewn all over the place to make her 'creations'. The only things which Poppy possesses that are of value are her abilities and an old accordion. Before the person comes, the people of Vinegar Street are free to do as they please. They wear what they like, do what they like and no one judges them. Afterwards, they all have to conform to the same standards. I think that this would be a bad thing because one of the best things about a person is their individuality and if we all did the same things then there would be none of that left in us. It also would not be a bad thing if everyine was allowed to do anything they wanted because some people might want to hurt others or destroy things. It was an interesting book. I think that this book is for children aged 7 and over. Iestyn Evans 1st July 2000 |
