Scarlath the Hawk flew from his nest in the deep of winter, never to return! After being caught in a terrible storm, he had been captured by Swartt Sixclaw, a young and cunning ferret and was destined for the cook pot! Fortunately for Scarlath, Sunflash the Mace (a badger, son of Bella of Redwall), saves him. Sunflash had also been caught by Swartt and his motley hoard but together they escaped and began a life-long friendship.

After what Swartt had done to him, Sunflash was hungry for revenge. He begins to search the land for the ferret. They decide that their best plan is to make many lightning strikes, taking out the hoard slice by slice.

There is a surprise waiting for Sunflash in the end - something waiting for him that will change the rest of his life.

It was not one of the best books in the series. It did not seem to have as much suspense and action as some of the others but it was still good and worth reading.

I think I had two favourite characters - surprise, surprise, the good guys - Scarlath and Flash! They worked well together and it was nice to have a Hawk as one of the main characters.
