I saw this story on TV as a series for the BBC and I liked it so I thought I would like to read the book.

The story is about a group of 4 children and one toddler which they call "the lamb"! They go to stay in the country and they find a sand fairy called a psammead. The psammead has the ability to grant them wishes but it is not a very friendly creature and it only gives them one a day and it seems to enjoy twisting their wishes so that they end up in trouble. Whatever they wish for only lasts until sundown though so they are able to get out of the trouble without too many problems.

I guess my favourite part is when they were under siege in a castle and they poured kettles of water out of the window. It is a fun story but I did not enjoy reading it very much. The language was very old fashioned and it was full of footnotes which were to explain what the words meant. They were words that no-one uses today and it spoiled the story a bit. Also I would have had the children think of lots more adventurous wishes if it had been my book. Also, the copy I have had very small typing in it which was tiring to read.

I would say it was worth reading because the idea is very good and some parts are very funny but it needs rewriting into more modern language really. The film was better.
