This is the second book by Philip Ridley that I have read. It is a fiction story about a boy called Kasper and his mother, Pumpkin.  Kasper has never gone outside the gates of his own house and has never met another person. In this book he tries to find out who has been stealing his roses .... when he finds out, the trouble starts. Kasper has to learn to cope in the world outside and his mum has to learn to change her ways and be more sensible!

I think Philip Ridley wrote a very good book with some great characters in it. The story was fun and I was curious to find out what happened next. I like Chris Riddell's illustrations too, especially the way he drew Heartthrob but he didn't always draw them the way I pictured them. I liked the way he split the City into The Glitter and The Gloom because that is how London is with people living in houses and people who have to live on the streets. It might make people think about the poor people and children and how bad their life is. Mark Longworth does excellent covers but I did not understand why he chose a pie and moths until I was a long way into the book - you do find out though!

One of the funniest bits is where poor Kasper  has to go into the beauty salon and have black-heads pinched out of him to cheer his Mum up!!!!!!!! I think Kasper was bossed around quite a bit and I am not sure his mother appreciated all the nice things he did for her very much.

I would recommend this book to ages 7 and over. It is fun and not very hard to read or understand.
