| This is a very good book and I think that it should be a modern
classic! The writing is very good with lots of exciting, descriptive passages which keep
you totally absorbed in the story. Your mind makes up great pictures from the
descriptions. This is the second book in the series and although it was not quite as good as the first one it was still VERY good! It deserved to be the gold award winner for 1998. This story is about Harry's second year at the school of witchcraft and wizardry - Hogwarts! All the characters from the first book are there and a few new ones too like Ron's little sister called Ginny. In this book Harry almost missed a term because his angry uncle tried to lock him up. Thanks to Ron and his older brothers, he escaped. They flew Harry to their home in a bewitched car! Ron's dad liked to play with "muggle" technology and make them able to do lots of curious things that we couldn't do in a million years! When Harry tries to get to platform 9 3/4 by going through the ticket barrier (which is very heavy) he finds out that a little house elf had stopped them being able to get through to the train that takes them to Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry so they have to fly there in the bewitched car and unfortunately a "muggle" (someone who isn't magic) spots them. Why is the elf trying to stop Harry from getting to school? Will Ginny be in the same school house as her brothers? What is the legendary "chamber of secrets" and is Harry Slytherin's heir? You'll have to read it for yourself! Thomas Taylor does some good cover illustrations but I did prefer the ones on the first book. The car looks really cool though! Iestyn Evans |
