| This is another upsetting book
by Jacqueline Wilson but it is fun too and it is interesting and it makes you think. In
this book there is this little girl called Elsa and her little sister called Pippa and a
baby brother called Hank and their parents have run out of money and so they cannot live
in their house any more and they have to live in a bead and breakfast hotel with other
families who are poor.
Elsa likes to tell jokes ALL THE TIME which is fun for kids but the adults get very
annoyed especially her Dad. Mack is not really her Dad, he is Pippa's and Hank's but her
Dad left when she was little and Mack does not seem to like her very much and he HITS
her!!!!!!!!!!! She calls him "Mack the Smack"!
Elsa gets into a lot of trouble all the time and it is not always her fault. Sometimes
she is a bit rude and foul words come out of her mouth but overall she is quite nice I
think and she manages to be happy considering there is not enough to eat and no space in
their room and she gets smacked all the time.
Elsa does something very brave in the book and it has a better ending which is happier.
I did like the book and sometimes it is very very funny but other times it is sad or
even shocking like when she did not go to school when she was supposed to! I would
recommend this book to older children in Juniors - perhaps 8 because it is upsetting for
littler ones.
The illustrations are fun. Nick Sharrat always does fun illustrations and his covers
are very eye-catching. He seems to illustrate a LOT of covers!
